Favorite Books for Late Elementary
Children at these age levels like books about kids slightly older than themselves. They like characters who can solve problems. They prefer a direct writing style, strong imagery, clearly defined characters and a happy ending. They are bored by long passages, too much dialogue, long descriptions and slow beginnings. Popular subjects include animals, pets, adventure, school life, quests, and triumphs of good over evil.

Thee Hannah. Hannah wants terribly to wear pretty ribbons on her bonnet. Hannah does not realize how important her “plain” bonnet is she helps a runaway slave.
Henner’s Lydia. A young Amish girl must finish a hooked mat before she can go to market with her father. But Lydia is much more interested in the goings on around the farm.

of the most dearly loved books of
childhood, this tells of the friendship
between Wilbur the pig and a spider
named Charlotte. When Wilbur's life is endangered, Charlotte writes a message

Stories of the Pilgrims by Margaret Pumphrey. These stories will touch your heart as you and your children follow the Pilgrims in their long, costly search for religious freedom. A slightly edited reprint of the 1900 edition, this book contains many stories of men and women ready to sacrifice everything for what they believed.

Horse-lovers, these books are for you! Henry's books are fictionalized true stories that have made these horses and their human companions familiar to generations of children. Several are about Misty, a Chincoteague pony who became world famous. Marguerite Henry's Horseshoe Library is a boxed set containing the three books about Misty (Misty of Chincoteague, Sea Star Orphan of Chincoteague, and Stormy, Misty’s Foal).
Misty's Twilight is Henry's latest novel about descendants of the famous wild pony Misty.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. The Herdmans, the worst kids in the history of the world, bully their way into getting all the main parts in the annual Christmas pageant and they give a whole new meaning to the old, old story.
Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Books by Walter Farley
As a horse-crazy kid, I devoured everything written by Walter Farley. He wrote The Black Stallion when he was 17 years old and it immediately became one of the most famous horse stories of all time. It also propelled Farley into fame as one of the most beloved of all authors of children's books. Farley wrote many books about horses, but be sure to read these:
The Black Stallion is about a boy and a wild Arabian stallion shipwrecked together on a deserted island.
The Island Stallion is my personal favorite of Farley's books and is about a boy on an archeological search who discovers a hidden valley of horses left over from Conquistadore days.
Books by Holling C. Holling
Holling’s books are delightful to read because not only do they tell interesting stories, but they have wonderful illustrations, maps, charts, and other drawings to help explain the stories.
Tree in the Trail tells the history of the Sante Fe Trail through following the changes of a tree in the trail.
Paddle to the Sea follows the travels of a hand-carved boat through the Great Lakes.
Minn of the Mississippi traces the route of the Mississippi River through the travels of a turtle.
Seabird is an ivory carving that passes through several generations as modes of travel change.
Pagoo tells the story of life in a tidal pool through the adventures of the crab Pagoo.

Little Lord Fauntleroy. A bitter English Lord searches for the grandson he has never met. When he finds Cedric, the little boy's kindness transforms the cruel and impatient old man.
