In San Jose, CA there is a very unique structure called The Winchester Mystery House. It's a huge, sprawling house with stairways leading nowhere (some of which have steps only two inches high), rooms placed at odd angles, columns built upside down, and passages with secret doors. Visitors are advised not to wander off from their tour group because the house is laid out in such a confusing way that wandering tourists can get lost for hours.
The story goes that in the 1884 Sarah Winchester, a wealthy widow suffering from the loss of her child and her husband, was told by a medium that the death of her loved ones was due to evil spirits and Sarah could avoid their same fate if she started building a house and worked nonstop on it. As long as construction of the house never ceased, her life was not in danger. So Mrs. Winchester devoted the rest of her life and over 5 million dollars to building an extravagant maze of Victorian craftmanship. She hired carpenters to work in shifts around the clock. For nearly thirty-eight years, the sound of sawing, sanding, and hammering at the Winchester Mystery House never ceased—even on weekends or holidays. When Sarah Winchester died in 1922, construction had rambled over six acres and the mansion contained 160 rooms, 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 47 stairways, 47 fireplaces, 13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens. Nothing about the house was determined by an overall plan of how the different elements would fit together.
I've been reminded of the Winchester Mystery House this week as I've been a volunteer at a Creativity Conference hosted by my church. It's focus is on re-introducing the arts into the church (drama, dance, painting, singing, etc.) as elements of Christian transformation. Pastors and church members have come from all over the world to discover the "How?" of incorporating the arts into their Christian walk and into their church life. They are full of questions about the technicalities, but the more questions they asked, the more I began to notice something about their questions. When I spent time talking with them I realized that it's not really the technicalities they are after. What they really want is an answer to the question of "How do we create the kind of Christian culture that ministers to the whole person—spirit, soul, and body?"
When I've spoken and exhibited at homeschool conferences I found the same thing happening. Over and over and over I would be asked by hundreds and hundreds of people: "How do I do this?"
I've learned that when someone asks me the "how" question, they aren't really looking for an answer that discusses the technicalities like which art supplies to stock or how to schedule the school day or what's the best curriculum. What they really want to know is how do they fulfill some sort of heart longing they have for their church or their children and family to become.
Whether you're a conference-going pastor wanting to learn "how?" to incorporate the arts into the ministry of your church life or a parent wanting to know "how?" to homeschool your children, you have to remember that the "how?" is always part of an overall context. You have to be working towards the overall context for the "how?" to have any relevance. Otherwise you are building your own Winchester Mystery House—a mishmash driven by fear and with no real plan for what you are building and how everything fits into that plan.
I found this funny, clever video about the difference between homeschoolers and the homeschooled.

I Carved the Angel from the Marble is over 220 pages and takes an deeper look at the different elements that make home schooling a successful adventure in learning. Chapters cover how to recognize your "angels in the marble" and help set them free; how to get off the "hamster wheel"of activity if you feel overwhelmed and undersupported in your homeschooling efforts; how to develop your own scope and sequence of study for each child; how to teach the major subjects such as language arts, history, math and science in your homeschool; and much, much more!
In the twenty-plus years I’ve home schooled, I’ve spoken with thousands of other home schooling parents and I’ve discovered that most problems with home schooling tend to occur because parents get hung up over the HOWs of home schooling. And the reason is, they don’t have a strong enough WHY.
In Christian jargon, we might call the WHY a conviction and we could say that their home schooling efforts became a struggle because their conviction about home school ing was unclear or wavering.
Let’s be realistic. Home schooling is not for everyone. Home schooling is a massive, full-time commitment, primarily for Mom. Done well, it requires a total reorientation of your life, not just four or five hours of your day.
This e-book will help you create a strong enough WHY about home schooling to propel you through any problems of HOW. You can read it HERE.

Using her method, people are cutting a 30 year mortgage down to eight or nine years. It’s true; without extra payments or refinancing – you could save tens of thousands of dollars - even hundreds of thousands - on what you pay for your home. And the best part is that the book comes with a money-back guarantee. If you don't save more on your mortgage than the book costs in the first 18 months of using the techniques, you'll get your money back. Find out more about this money-saving book NOW!
