I just filled out your survey, which made me think of lots of memories of homeschooling. I'm sending a few of my favorite photos!
Like you, I am at the other end of homeschooling.
But I tell everyone - I don't regret for a minute my decision to homeschool, and I know I never will. I could not have spent the past 20
years doing anything more wonderful for my children or myself.
What home schooling means to me
I know the heart of my children. We have spent day in and day out together for all their growing up years. Now, though the boys are off to
college and only our daughter is still at home, we are closely tied together.
Laughter - I miss the kids being home now, the house is too quiet!
Frustration - when you are in the middle of dealing with a learning problem or motivation problem, it is hard to see that the end will be
OK. But as I see my children as adults, they are great! They have excellent priorities, are wise, and are all serving God.
When you are in the middle of their growing up years, it seems as though the kids will never grow up and you will always struggle with the same
problems! Now mine are grown - and I want those days back!
Messiness - there have always been projects spread all over the house. Though I was frustrated at times over the mess, it was part of learning.
There is a big difference between a mess that has been sitting there for months and one that is a current project.
Stuff - this house is a library, auto mechanic shop, office supply store, sewing store, music academy, computer lab, restaurant, consulting
firm, etc. etc. etc.
No homeschooling at the table, and certainly no little desks! But homeschooling under the table, and in the constant forts the kids were
always building in the living room out of chairs and bedding, and in the yard as soon as the temperature reaches a balmy 50 in April (we live in
Wisconsin), and in the kitchen, and in the garage.
When my second son was 14, he spent the month of October building a garage with both his
grandpas. What could be more wonderful? And, lots of travel when everyone else is stuck in school!
A house with no television.
No "instant" meals in the kitchen. No cake mixes, instant macaroni and cheese, etc. We make real food here!
Lots and lots and lots of bookcases and books!
An entire family who runs to the computer and books to get answers to questions when they come up in life. A family with a passion for
learning that is life long.
How about dad takes the kids out for an hour or two and mom gets the house all to herself! What an incredible blessing!
One time I took my son to the pediatrician, who asked him, "What grade are you in at school?" My son replied, "I don't go to school." He loved
the shock on people's faces when he said that. However, I was waiting for the pediatrician to call social services! Fortunately, the
pediatrician supported homeschooling and we did great.
My oldest went through a "why" stage, asking about everything. Finally I declared that I would answer no more questions after 9pm each evening -
I was too mentally exhausted from answering them all day every day!
What home schooling is
It is hard.
It is completely worthwhile.
It leads to siblings who are best friends.
It leads to children who are willing to challenge the world, are confident, are unique and don't mind being different than everyone else
- but they are not nerds!!! One time I had a father who was interested in homeschooling come meet my boys to see if they are nerds! He was
pleased, they were not! Was that ever hilarious! (I have been a homeschooling regional coordinator, county coordinator for the past 16
years, and teaching workshops for the past 10 years.)
A homeschooler's best friend can be 3 years younger or 10 years older. Homeschoolers don't pay any attention to how old each other are, they
just all take each other where they are and have relationships.
If you haven't had a chance yet to tell me what home schooling means to you, please GO HERE NOW. It will just take you a few minutes and your input is invaluable to me.
Thanks!
